Matthew
Willsher, Chief Executive Officer at Etisalat Nigeria who explained the
rationale behind the innovation prize as well as the company’s continuous
support for innovative platforms and initiatives stated that Etisalat was
presenting its proof to the promise it made at the launch of the prize over two
years ago and further reinforcing the telecom company’s uniqueness as the
organisation that makes a difference in the society.
According
to Willsher, “We are pleased to formally present these two gentlemen
who
developed the most innovative product and idea of the 2014 Pan-African Prize
for Innovation to the media and present their prizes to them as well. We will
work with them to further enhance the product and idea in order to provide
realistic solutions to everyday challenges and make a difference to our average
customer either financially or socially.”
The
first prize of $25,000 for the Most Innovative Product or Service was presented
to Exammate, an Exam preparatory programme for JAMB candidates, while the
second prize of $10,000 for the Most Innovative Idea was presented to
Interactive Media Interface Design (IMID), a remote communication interface for
GPRS-enabled pre-paid meters.
One
of the winners, Anthony Oniwon commended Etisalat for providing such platform
for young inventors and developers. He expressed the opinion that the prize
would spur great inventions and innovations that would further boost the
economy of African countries.
The
winners were announced at the AfricaCom Awards Gala Dinner which held in Cape
Town, South Africa, in November 2014.
