Google is looking to build wireless networks across
Asia and Africa using high-altitude balloons and blimps.
According to wired.com, the aim is to help connect around
one billion people to the Internet by financing, building and helping to
operate networks from sub-Saharan Africa to Southeast Asia.
To support the project, Google has been developing an
ecosystem to low-cost, Android smartphones with low-power microprocessors.
By carrying the signal on high-altitude platforms,
Google is expected to be able to cover areas of hundreds of square kilometres.
